Hub Theatre Company of Boston will cap off its critically acclaimed third season with Timberlake Wertenbaker’s The Love of the Nightingale at First Church in Boston, Friday, November 6 through Saturday, November 21. This timely and topical production addresses the issue of sexual violence, which has reached crisis proportions in our communities, corporations and college campuses.

In this powerful, contemporary adaptation of the classic Greek myth of Tereus, the focus is shifted from the doomed king to his wife Procne and her sister Philomele in a story about love, lies, and retribution. With wisdom and unexpected wit, the play illuminates the legacy of violence and loss that stems from both the silence imposed upon us by others and the silence we impose upon ourselves. The Love of the Nightingale is a thought-provoking piece of theatre that compels each of us to consider the cost of silence and the power of finding one’s voice.

Local favorite Rebecca Bradshaw, most recently celebrated for her deft direction of Speakeasy’s extremely successful run of Bad Jews, directs an amazingly talented and diverse cast in this poignant and provocative drama. Infused with original music and choreography by Tyler Catanella and Bahar Royaee, this brilliantly theatrical piece will stay with you long after you leave the theatre.

All tickets are Pay-What-You-Can! We don’t decide the price, you do. Our ‘sweet spot’ would be about $20; if you are on a budget, pay less, and if you are able to pay more, please do!

Certain books were “banned in Boston” at least as far back as 1651, when one William Pynchon wrote a book criticizing Puritanism.
