Join us for a lively discussion of how books that explore pressing social and political issues spark dialogue and affect perceptions.

  • Melia Bensussen: Performing Arts Department of Emerson College faculty member, Obie Award-winning stage director, currently adapting Common Ground for the stage
  • Kirsten Greenidge: Huntington Playwriting Fellow, playwright of Luck of the Irish and Milk Like Sugar, currently adapting Common Ground for the stage
  • Steven Luxenberg: Washington Post editor, 2016 Lukas Work-in-Progress Award-winning author of Separation: The Story of Plessy v. Fergusson and America’s Journey from Slavery to Segregation
  • Diane McWhorter: Pulitzer Prize and 2002 Lukas Book Prize-winning author of Carry Me Home: Birmingham, Alabama, the Climatic Battle of the Civil Rights Revolution
  • Gary Younge: columnist for The Guardian and The Nation, winner of the 2018 Lukas Book Award for Another Day in the Death of America: A Chronicle of Ten Short Lives

ABOUT THE LUKAS BOOK AWARDS: Established in 1998, the J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards recognize excellence in nonfiction that exemplifies the literary grace and commitment to serious research and social concern that characterized the work of the awards’ Pulitzer Prize-winning namesake, J. Anthony Lukas, who died in 1997. Four awards are given: two J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Awards, the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize, and the Mark Lynton History Prize.
