A Night of Poetry at Porter Square Books

February 16, 2017 | 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join REBECCA MORGAN FRANK, JENNIFER MILITELLO, AND KATHLEEN OSSIP for readings from their latest collections.

Magicians, wig makers, sculptors, perfumers, choreographers, and composers all help conjure the worlds of Frank’s second collection, The Spokes of Venus. These poems offer a landscape shaped by the tensions between the act of making and the art of observing. If music and art are the sisters of poetry, this collection is a chorus a glorious one of siblings arguing and singing.

Militello’s third full-length collection, A Camouflage of Specimens and Garments, casts a smokescreen of selves. Fragmentary letters addressing illness and struggle are interspersed with the voices of mythological heroes and long-dead composers, ancient goddesses and murdered girls. Intricate “dictionaries” offer multi- layered definitions that are meant to provide shelter from a world that cannot be controlled. This captivating book stitches together a plethoric identity so as to examine everyday disguises

Ossip’s The Do-Over is an unsentimental elegy to a mother figure, a fragmented portrait of its difficult, much loved subject. It’s also a snapshot of our death-obsessed, death-denying cultural moment, which in Ossip’s hands turns out to be tremulous, skeptical, unsure of ultimate values and, increasingly, driven to find them. “I am still studying, aren’t you?” she begins. Readers will eagerly embrace the surprise, humor, and seriousness of her quest.
