GrubStreet’s Write Down the Street: The Stories of Your Life

April 5, 2017 | 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 1:00pm on Wednesday, repeating until May 10, 2017

Free

GrubStreet and the Boston Public Library are pleased to offer “Write Down the Street,” free creative writing classes in Boston neighborhoods, beginning in the Egleston Square and Grove Hall branch libraries. Participants have the option of attending low commitment drop-in classes and more focused 6-week courses.

“Stories of Your Life” is a new 6-week weekly nonfiction class being offered. Everyone has worthwhile stories to tell, but how do we make those experiences come alive on the page? In this class, we will write each week and in the process we’ll try to keep loose, stay inspired, and rediscover that writing creatively is, above all, a pleasure. Most weeks we’ll read and discuss one or two published short essays or poems, maybe listen to a song or study a photograph, and then we’ll try a different exercise to explore an element of craft, tightening our approach to character development, structure, setting, and language. You’ll generate a lot of material, refine your editing skills, and take a fresh look at your life experience.
