The Haymarket Project at Boston Public Library

November 2, 2016 | 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The Boston Public Library is pleased to welcome Justin Goodstein for a discussion of the Haymarket, from its beginnings as an expansion of Quincy Market in the first half of the nineteenth century, to its current incarnation as a host of an ever-changing and diverse population. Haymarket has witnessed the Central Artery rise above it in the 1950s and retreat underground almost sixty years later with the completion of the Big Dig in 2007. For most of the twentieth century, the pushcarts of Italian produce vendors lined both sides of Blackstone Street, while today’s market includes halal butchers, artisanal cheese mongers, and Cambodian fruit sellers. Goodstein is principal photographer for Digital Projects at the Boston Public Library and earned an honorable mention in BostInno’s 50 on Fire, an awards ceremony recognizing tech leaders in Boston. His work on Haymarket began with a photo exhibition at Suffolk University last fall, followed by a documentary and, most recently, a book published by Arcadia Publishing.

Justin Goodstein is principal photographer for Digital Projects at the BPL. His work on Haymarket began with a photo exhibition, became a short film, and then a book.
