In 1939, a Catholic fraternal organization called the Christian Front was founded in Boston. Its propaganda efforts for the Nazis were so successful that British intelligence established its own organization in Boston. Charles R. Gallagher describes the covert British operation in Boston and discusses the consequences of both Nazi and British spying. The subject of a forthcoming book, the talk is based on declassified documents from archives in London, Berlin, and Boston, and over 3,500 pages of declassified files from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Gallagher, SJ, is Assistant Professor of History at Boston College.
Certain books were “banned in Boston” at least as far back as 1651, when one William Pynchon wrote a book criticizing Puritanism.
