GrubStreet and Harvard Book Store welcome debut novelists Jennifer S. Brown and Marian McMahon Stanley for a reading and discussion of their books, MODERN GIRLS and THE IMMACULATE. Jennifer S. Brown’s MODERN GIRLS takes place in 1935 when an immigrant mother and her American born daughter must re-evaluate their beliefs and the traditions of their Jewish faith when they discover they are both pregnant. Marion McMahon Stanley’s mystery, THE IMMACULATE, follows the investigation of the murder of a Boston nun. Both books explore themes of religion and characters who are forced to break with traditions.
This event is free and open to the public and includes a book signing.
Certain books were “banned in Boston” at least as far back as 1651, when one William Pynchon wrote a book criticizing Puritanism.
