Join NADIA COLBURN for two FREE online meditation and writing sessions.

It can be so hard especially for writers to find good supported writing sessions and to stay stable in our to-fast world.

These sessions are designed to help us come back to center and reconnect with ourselves so that we can be the change we want to see in the world. They are for everyone, professional writers and newbies alike–anyone who wants to take an hour (or less) to come back to yourself and to have some supported meditation and writing time.

It’s amazing how a bit of meditation and then writing can help us come into greater clarity–on almost every level.

Come with your own project or be supported by the prompts

On Friday, after short meditations, I’ll be leading prompts that help us work with our stories. We can’t over-jump our own shadows; only by looking clearly at ourselves can we access our full creativity, peace and strength.

On Tuesday, I’ll be leading a session on writing joy, one of the trickiest but also most rewarding emotions to work with.

Come for part or all of the sessions, and if you can’t make the sessions live, I’ll send out a recording to those who sign up.

Writing About Family: a free creative writing workshop

“I’ve been wanting to write about the women in my family for some time, but haven’t known where to start,” says the narrator of a short story by Argentinian writer Pola Oloixarac. Can you relate? Whether you want to write fiction or nonfiction, writing about family can be complicated. How do you shape your story? How can you make complex relationships make sense on the page and write without nostalgia or sentimentality? In this short workshop, you will look at examples from both fiction and memoir, write new material, and have the opportunity to discuss your work.

Coffee and snacks provided. Families are welcome. The workshop is geared towards adults, but teens are welcome to participate with a parent or older relative. Simple activities will be provided to keep children busy.

About the Instructor

Denise Delgado is a writer, artist, educator and consultant. Her fiction and critical work have appeared in Inch, Hinchas de Poesía, Jai-Alai Magazine, and Fiction Writers Review, among others. Delgado received an MA in Media Studies from The New School and an MFA in fiction from Warren Wilson College. She is currently at work on a linked collection of short stories set in Miami.

Young Writers and Illustrators: Meet & Greet

Meet other local youth (ages 18 & under) who share the same interest in writing and art that you do on Monday, March 19^th. This is an opportunity to connect with other young writers and illustrators from Wakefield, Stoneham, Melrose, Reading, Saugus, Lynnfield, North Reading, Wilmington, Winchester, and surrounding towns in a casual and art-focused atmosphere. Bring your curiosity for creativity! Stop in for any length of time starting at 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Boys & Girls Club of Wakefield’s Teen Room, located on the ground floor of the Civic Center (467 Main Street, Wakefield, MA). This is a FREE event.

Create Illustration Trading Cards, try out our typewriters, learn about zines or just chat and connect with other young people off-line. Feel welcome to bring your own art or writing to share. Enjoy a cup of tea, coffee or some hot cocoa with plenty of whipped cream along with some sweet treats.

Carmen Bardeguez-Brown work was showcased in the documentary: Latino Poets in the United States. She has been invited to read at The Nuyorican Poets Café, The Fez, Mad Alex Foundation, Smoke, The Soho Arts Festival, Long wood Gallery, The Kitchen, La Casa Azul, New Years Alternative Poetry Marathon at Dixon Place, The Boricua College Poetry Series, Caribbean Theater, Word Festival 2013 and many other venues in the tri-state area. Some of her work has been performed by Felipe Luciano’s Poets’s Choir and Butch Morris Conduction series #27 performed at The Whitney Museum. Her work has been published in Tribes, Long Shot, Fuse, School Voices, Anthology: Aloud Voices from the Nuyorican, ¡Manteca!: An Anthology of AfroLatin@ Poets and Pha’titude. She has two poetry books: Straight from the Drums: Al Ritmo del Tamborcould be and Dreaming Rhythms Despertando Silenciospublished by Miguel Estepario. Her third book of poetry: Meditation on Love, Dance and Loss will be published late this year. She is one of 50 Puerto Ricans showcased in the exhibition Homenaje created and curated by Ricardo Muniz that is currently housed at the Centro for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College.

Afternoon Workshop with PEGGY ROBLES-ALVARADO: Botánica and Verses

About the Workshop

Botánica and Verses is a one hour generative judgement- free writing workshop facilitated by award winning performance poet, author and initiated Priestess Peggy Robles -Alvarado that focuses on writing developed through the use of fresh herbs, herbal folklore and body-centered prompts. Participants will learn the traditional uses of several herbs to heal the body and will be guided to produce and share original writing in any style that restores the connections between the earth, body and the creative spirit.

About the Poet

PEGGY ROBLES-ALVARADO is a tenured New York City educator with graduate degrees in elementary and bilingual education. She is a 2017 Pushcart Prize nominee, a CantoMundo, Academy for Teachers and Home School Fellow as well as a two-time International Latino Book Award winner and author of Conversations With My Skin and Homage to the Warrior Women. As a former teen mother and an initiated priestess in the Lukumi and Palo spiritual systems, Peggy uses her incredible rhythmic energy to celebrate womanhood and honor cultural rituals. She is a 2014 BRIO performance poet award winner and in 2016 she was named one of the 25 Most Influential Women of the Bronx, a BCA Arts Fund, and Spaceworks Bronx Community Artist Grant recipient. Peggy has been published in 92Y’s #wordswelivein, NACLA, ¡Manteca! An Anthology of Afro-Latin@ Poets, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies, The Bronx Memoir Project, The Other Side of Violet Anthology and the forthcoming anthology Latina Voices. She has been featured on HBO Habla Women, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Poets & Writers Connecting Cultures Reading, and The BADD!ASS Women Festival. Take a little time on a wintry evening to relax, reflect, and create! Local writer ELIZABETH MORONEY will guide you through writing exercises that help you put your past in words. You’ll leave with strategies and ideas to keep your writing going.

What happens when what you want for your friends isn’t what they want for themselves? Lifelong pals Robyn, Trudy and Hannah’s friendship is put to the ultimate test when Robyn falls in love with an unlikely suitor. Hannah and Trudy are convinced that Robyn has made a horrible choice that could ruin her life and as friends since grade school, they decide it’s their duty to intervene. What could possibly go wrong? With biting one-liners, escalating confrontations and a wildly unpredictable climax, this savagely funny new comedy is a little bit Sex and the City and a little bit Titus Andronicus.
